Talking railways in HRM – two presentations

Cape Breton RailwaysThis Friday and Saturday, Herb MacDonald will be giving talks at 2 HRM libraries:

Friday, Nov 15 / 12 noon, Spring Garden Road Memorial Public Library, Halifax Halifax as a Railway Terminus1854-2013 This talk will examine the rise and decline of the railways that connected the port of Halifax to the interiors of Nova Scotia and Canada.

Saturday, Nov 16 / 10 a.m., Musquodoboit Harbour Public Library The Golden Age of Nova Scotia Railways: 1890-1960 This program will look at the evolution of the Canadian National and Dominion Atlantic systems, branches like the Musquodoboit line, and the impacts of railways on Nova Scotia communities. 

These are free presentations open to all.

Herb MacDonald is the author of Cape Breton Railways: An Illustrated History (CBU Press, 2012).

Michael Newton on the Highland Clearances

Bearing the People AwayMichael Newton, editor of the recently published Celts in the Americas, has written an informative blog post on the Highland Clearances in which he asks, “If it is no longer acceptable to rationalize the dispossession and displacement of other native peoples on account of their supposed inferiority… why is this same underlying conceit so seldom questioned about the Gaels?” Anyone interested in the history of the Highland Clearances should read the post in full.

Page Turner Project a Success

Yesterday, October 24, 2013, 22 students from 10 different schools across Cape Breton gathered at Baddeck Academy to take part in the Page Turner Project, a workshop run by CBU Press author Philip Roy specially designed for young writers, held in conjunction with CBC Radio One’s Information Morning.
