“Trapper Boy” to launch in Sydney Mines October 17
New novel for young readers chronicles 1920s mining family
Sydney Mines native and first-time novelist Hugh R. MacDonald will launch his book to an appreciative home audience on October 17.
Set in a 1920s coal-mining town, Trapper Boy is the story of 13-year-old JW Donaldson, a good student with a bright future. While there is a lot of talk in JW’s family, and around the town, about the mines, JW is in no hurry to know the details.
It turns out that his father’s hours at the mine have been reduced and the family face difficult decisions to try to make ends meet. One such decision has a previously unimagined impact on the young man’s life.
Hugh MacDonald, a human services professional, has been writing for many years, but this is his first published novel.
Trapper Boy is making its way into area stores and will be launched in Sydney Mines on Wednesday, October 17, at 6:30 p.m. at the Cape Breton Fossil Centre, Legatto Street in Sydney Mines. Everyone is welcome.
