New book translates articles from Mac-Talla

Rev. Duncan Blair (1815-1893) never forgot where he came from or what his people had been through.
A newly published collection of Rev. Blair’s writings is the subject of a forthcoming talk by its translator and editor, John Alick MacPherson.
The talk is scheduled for Wednesday, October 16, 2:30 p.m. at the Beaton Institute at Cape Breton University. This is during Celtic Colours week and will also be live-streamed on the web at: http://capebretonlivetv.blogspot.ca/
Blair was Minister to the Presbyterian congregation at Barney’s River, Pictou County. The small Presbyterian church in Garden of Eden, Pictou County, bears his name to this day.
Rev. Blair was a prolific Gaelic writer who contributed to publications on both sides of the Atlantic, including Mac-Talla (the first all Gaelic newspaper in the world), published in Sydney, Cape Breton, between 1892 and 1904 by Jonathan MacKinnon.
Fògradh, Fàisneachd, Filidheachd / Parting, Prophecy, Poetry – translated and edited by Mr. MacPherson and Michael Linkletter – is a transcription and translation of Blair’s contributions to Mac-Talla. Articles on the Highland Clearances, other historical essays, travelogues and a selection of his poetry are included.
Uist-born John Alick MacPherson is a well-known Gaelic scholar and translator living in Grand Mira, Cape Breton. Michael Linkletter is Chair of Celtic Studies at St. Francis Xavier University.
This event is a presentation of the Beaton Institute and Cape Breton University Press. Everyone is welcome.
