This book sheds light on the role of women in co-operative development in Nova Scotia. Remarkably, given the overall conditions of the times, a number of women found niches and new careers in a region dominated by a hierarchical, authoritarian, paternalistic church in a very conservative part of Canada that had a strong tradition of dependency.
