No Place Like Home: The Life and Times of Cape Breton Heritage Houses is the first volume in a series of books which will record the history of Cape Breton heritage houses and the lives and stories of the men and women who lived in them. The purpose of No Place Like Home is to show the various architectural styles which have developed since Europeans first began building Homes in Cape Breton. These architectural styles were dictated by custom geography and the social and economic condition of the communities in which the people lived and built their houses. Personal preferences and idiosyncrasies were also an important component because, in the early years, more so than now, people expected to live in their homes for most or all of their adult lives and then to pass the home on to their children. As the needs of the family changes, so too did the shape and design of the houses.
