In the Blood – Cape Breton: A Visual Diary by Gary Samson and Lindsey Vladyka
While working with Burt Feintuch making photographs for their book In the Blood: Cape Breton Conversations on Culture (2010, CBU Press and Utah State University Press), Gary Samson and his assistant Lindsey Vladyka undertook a two-month photographic exploration of Cape Breton Island. Using a variety of cameras and formats, Samson and Vladyka concentrated on the dramatic and brutally rugged landscape, as well as the people and culture of this stunningly beautiful island.
In the Blood – Cape Breton Conversations on Culture by Burt Feintuch with photographs by Gary Samson
Based on interviews carried out by folklorist Burt Feintuch (University of New Hampshire), In the Blood conveys the power of culture. Artists, musicians, economic development specialists, educators, former miners and steelworkers, First Nations activists, journalists, fishers, Gaelic revivalists and others are presented in a carefully edited, highly readable and engaging conversation about culture on the island. The book is supported by photographic portraits and an afterword by Gary Samson (New Hampshire Institute of Art). In the Blood is published by Cape Breton University Press and Utah State University Press.
