John Hewson
John Hewson, Professor Emeritus, Memorial University of Newfoundland, is a scholar of national and international reputation who has had a distinguished career in several branches of linguistics. His scholarly achievements in general linguistics, theoretical linguistics, historical linguistics, Amerindian and Romance linguistics are complemented by more than 14 completed books, 140-plus published papers and reviews and nearly 100 papers to learned societies. In collaboration with Bernie Francis, a Mi'kmaw linguist from Membertou, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, he produced an English-language rewrite of Father Pacifique's Mi'kmaw grammar (originally in French, with an inadequate orthography) to which new features, such as an index of 3,000 Micmac words, were added (1991). The grammar was updated in 2016 (CBU Press, 2016).
