Roderick J. MacSween, priest-professor-poet, was not a household name as a poet. He was well known to students and alumni of St. Francis Xavier University and he was known as the founding editor of The Antigonish Review, a literary journal he established in 1970 which still enjoys a strong reputation today. And he was known as an intellectual of formidable depth and learning.

Few, however, realized how much of an artist he actually was and—what is more—how much that artist was committed to poetry as his means of expression. Canadian poet and critic Louis Dudek referred to MacSween as Canada’s great unknown poet.

This is the first volume of a new series literary series from CBU Press entitled The Essential Cape Breton Library, series editor: Prof. Alex Pierce.
