“Downer’s writing style is clear and comprehensible, yet challenging enough for readers in the recommended age range.”
“Illustrations by Giséle LeBlanc-Turner not only contribute to an understanding of the text but are aesthetically pleasing.” “…LeBlanc-Turner accurately captures Selina’s experiences….”
“While most of the illustrations are presented in a realistic style, the artist includes more abstract images, adding variation, interest, and unconventionality.”
“…Downer and LeBlanc-Turner provide captivating text and appealing illustrations that are sure to seize the attention of young children and parents alike.”
Review by Roxy Garstad
Selina, by Don Downer with illustration by Gisele LeBlanc-Turner, is one of a set of three books on marine life by the pair, including Selby The Lobster and Schnider: A Harp Seal Story.
Earlier, also in CM reviewer Saeyong Kim wrote of Selby The Lobster (in CM … Volume XVIII Number 5. . . .September 30, 2011), “What is fun about Selby the Lobster is that all the information comes quite naturally…. There aren’t any charts or maps, and the illustrations are really illustrations in that they work with the text to tell a better story. They are not diagrams in disguise…. The text doesn’t read like a dressed-up list of facts, either.”
